About Højhuset
Højhuset is a cultural hotel housed in a listed 1960s building, where history, architecture, art and culture provide the setting for hotel stays, meetings, private events and cultural programmes.
The former folk high school has been carefully renovated with respect for its original character and today serves as both a hotel and a cultural centre.
The history
The story begins in 1961, when the Damgaard brothers founded a folk high school for employees in the Danish textile industry.
It later became Herning Folk High School, with a focus on the creative arts, before the school closed in 2007.
In 2016, the building was acquired by a private foundation with the ambition of preserving its listed architecture and continuing its role as a place for culture, learning and community.
On 28 April 2023 – exactly 61 years after the original folk high school opened – Højhuset Kulturhotel welcomed its first guests.
The house
Today, Højhuset brings together a hotel, meeting rooms, private event spaces, the Dining Hall and cultural activities under one roof.
The Fireplace Lounge, the Library, the Atrium Courtyard and the surrounding gardens provide space to relax and unwind. Greenhouses, kitchen gardens and a small flock of sheep are also part of the grounds surrounding Højhuset.
Architecture
The listed building is a distinctive example of Danish architecture from the 1960s.
The renovation has been carried out with respect for the building's original architecture, preserving many of its original materials, light fittings, washbasins, mirrors and other fixtures as part of Højhuset's interior.
Art and culture
Højhuset also serves as a cultural centre, hosting talks, concerts, communal dining, workshops and other events throughout the year.
Art is an integral part of Højhuset, both indoors and outdoors, and forms a natural part of the experience.
Birk
Højhuset is located in Birk, Herning's district for culture, education and architecture.
The area brings together art, architecture, educational institutions and green public spaces, all within easy walking distance.
Within walking distance are, among others HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum, Elia,, Skulpturparken and The Geometric Gardens.
Within driving distance
Deep Forest Artland, Søby Brown Coal Museum, Gable paintings in Brande, Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon – Arne Haugen Sørensen Museum, Warehouse of Art, Textile Museum.
